home hemodialysis

Hemodialysis at home

Having succeeded initially in the 1960s with the creation of dialyzers for home use, hemodialysis in the home is having a new resurgence. The technology and advances available today make it possible to have easier-to-use equipment, deliver materials at home and control blood tests remotely by telephone.

CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE TREATMENT FOR YOU
Whether you are preparing for dialysis or you want to switch to another type of dialysis, our Treatment Decision Guide can help you decide which are the best treatment options for you. What is hemodialysis in the home?
The basic process of hemodialysis in the home is exactly the same as that of hemodialysis in the center.

Through hemodialysis, blood is filtered out of the body through a dialyzer or "artificial kidney," which removes waste and fluids. Then, the filtered blood is returned to the body. Only 1 pint of blood is cleaned out of the body and returned at one time during dialysis: it is the same amount that is extracted in a blood donation.
Hemodialysis in the home: look for a partner in care
Each type of dialysis has aspects in favor and against. Home hemodialysis has many benefits, but you will need someone who wants to be trained, and committed, to you and accompany you during each dialysis treatment.
"Hemo" means blood and "dialysis" means filter, so hemodialysis means "blood filter".
Advantages of home hemodialysis

You have the comfort of being at home during treatment, while you have access to a nurse on call by phone.

If the doctor tells you, you can stay in the machine longer or more often, which can help you feel better, you may have more energy and less nausea and colic.

Together with the advice of the doctor or nurse, you can choose the time for treatments, so you have more flexibility for school, work or social activities.

You do not need to leave your home for treatment, which saves transportation time and transportation costs, and alleviates the unrest in terms of weather during the trip.

You or your care partner will put your own needles, which some people prefer.

You have more freedom with your diet if your doctor tells you more frequent dialysis treatments.

HOW TO LIVE FULLY
The most prolonged and slow dialysis treatments are the most bearable for the organism. Healthy kidneys work constantly. Therefore, if the dialysis treatments are longer or more frequent, they are much closer to natural kidney function. Home hemodialysis allows you to have a more flexible dialysis schedule than in a center.
What do you need to succeed

Approximately 4 to 8 weeks of training, along with your care partner (family member or friend).

Your care partner needs to be responsible, commit to participating in hemodialysis treatments at home or stay with you to supervise them.

You or your care partner should be willing to assemble the treatments and clean up afterwards.

Before you begin, check with your health insurance provider - or the social worker - whether the most frequent home hemodialysis treatments will be covered.

You must control your electricity and water systems in case you need to update or modify them.

The space reserved in your home to store supplies and equipment.
