Hello! I'm Judy,
financial coordinator at Fresenius Kidney Care

When you become a patient, a financial coordinator can guide you in the following:

What steps should you take before starting dialysis treatment?
    Understand the costs of dialysis
    Review your insurance options
Possible additional medical coverage options for which you may qualify

Dialysis cost management
Preparing finances and finding out about coverage before starting dialysis can be a great relief. The costs of dialysis may vary depending on the insurance coverage you have, the individual health plan and any other insurance or financial aid program for which you may be eligible. The good news is that it is not necessary to solve it alone. When you sign up for treatment, the Fresenius Kidney Care financial coordinator can guide you through the process.

Review your options before changing insurance
It is important to keep any health insurance coverage that you already have because a diagnosis of kidney failure can make it difficult to obtain a new plan. Make sure you're up to date with your premiums, and if you're worried about paying for your payments, there may be other options available to you. Consider visiting healthcare.gov (external link) for more information.

Get information about additional coverage options
Learn how Medicare or Medicare Advantage (external links) can help cover the cost of dialysis treatments and dialysis medications. For example, if you have Original Medicare, you will pay a coinsurance of 20% of the amount approved by Medicare for all the dialysis-related services that are covered and Medicare will pay the remaining 80%. If you have Medicare Advantage or a Medicare supplement plan, you can get additional coverage. When using Fresenius Kidney Care services, the financial coordinator can help you obtain information about your health care coverage options.
The basics: understanding the types of health insurance
Once you opt for Fresenius Kidney Care services, the financial coordinator will contact you to discuss your insurance coverage and show you all the different types of insurance, coverage opportunities and time requirements in your area. Do not hesitate to contact the financial coordinator for any questions you may have. You can also contact the customer service desk of your existing health care plan for information.

Employer group health plans
Insurance offered through your work or your spouse's work takes advantage of group purchasing power and can offer more competitive rates. If you or your spouse loses that job, you can continue your insurance through COBRA.
State and federal
Several government-sponsored programs provide medical coverage and the federal government can pay up to 80% of all dialysis costs for most people who receive this treatment. The programs include:

Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, Medicaid Risk, TRICARE, Veterans Administration (VA) and CHAMPVA, Indian Health Service, high risk insurance groups and kidney programs of the state. Your financial coordinator can help you determine which of the options may be available to you.
Private / Individual
A person can buy private health insurance plans, but these are not obtained through work or as part of government-sponsored programs. There are 2 main types of private medical plans: managed medical care, which uses a network of doctors, and indemnity medical insurance, which can be used with most providers.
