Health a day
Chronic renal failure
To maintain the health of the kidneys and prevent the onset of kidney failure is important to follow a balanced diet, drink daily between 1.5 and 2 liters of water, reduce alcohol consumption, and exercise regularly.

In addition to primary kidney disease, there are other factors that influence the progression of chronic renal failure, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, obstruction of the urinary tract, and significant ingestion of analgesics, among others. Chronic renal failure has no cure at present and, in general, the disease progresses even though the mentioned factors are kept under control.

The treatment of chronic renal failure, therefore, will be oriented to:

Try to neutralize the damage existing at the time of diagnosis.
Avoid the factors associated with renal failure, which may cause and enhance the aforementioned renal injuries.
Avoid the factors that cause glomerular sclerosis, such as excess protein and hyperglycemia and, in this way, delay the evolution of the disease.
Go treating the symptoms and conditions that appear as kidney failure progresses.

Dietary behavior in uremic syndrome

It is essential to keep track of nutrition in kidney failure.
Goals:

Slow the progression of kidney failure and improve uraemic symptoms by reducing protein intake.
Normalize the internal balance by adjusting the intake of water, electrolytes and minerals, and restore and maintain a good nutritional status.

Basic guidelines:

Control and normally reduce the intake of phosphorus, proteins, potassium (in advanced stages).
In turn, one must control and administer the amount of calcium, phosphorus, bicarbonate, iron (sometimes erythropoietin, better known as 'EPO', is needed to control anemia).
HTA control; very important to prevent the progression of the disease.

Substitute treatment of renal function

It allows for survival when renal function, even with the aforementioned measures, is practically non-existent and the patient presents symptoms of advanced deterioration.

There are different treatment options and all have advantages and disadvantages. It is the patient himself, with his family, and with the help of health professionals who provide him with adequate information, who chooses the modality that best adapts to his life, his preferences and his personal conditions.
Hemodialysis

It is an extracorporeal purification technique that consists in putting a blood fluid through a semi-permeable membrane that contributes to the purification and detachment of excess water and uraemic solutes (toxins that accumulate as a result of the decrease in glomerular filtration).
